Union Station in Raleigh construction 70 percent complete

The modern transportation hub is on track to open in January.

RALEIGH, North Carolina (WTVD) -- The nearly $90 million Union Station project in downtown Raleigh is on schedule and 70 percent complete.

The Raleigh Union Station is expected to be complete and operational by January, according to Raleigh's Construction Management team.

The transit hub will also feature restaurant space overlooking downtown, retail, a civil hall, public plaza, and garden.

Current construction includes building the station platform as well as the underpass of the West Street entry bridge, retaining walls, and concrete stairs for the plaza; a steel canopy has already been finished.

Crews have also completed flooring in the main hall and are installing electrical systems, sheetrock, and concrete flooring to the concourse.

Amtrak officials said once Raleigh Union Station opens in January, the current station on Cabarrus Street, which was built in 1950, will be demolished.
