The plane landed safely at 3:44 p.m.

American Airlines said the plane was diverted after an indicator light in the cockpit reported a possible mechanical issue.

It appeared there may have been a problem with the right engine. The FAA said the crew reported a thrust reverser problem.

There were 53 people on board - 50 passengers and three crew members.

The plane taxied to the terminal minutes after landing. All the passengers have been taken off the aircraft.

Later Friday evening, American Airlines said it appeared to be just an indicator issue.

"The issue was rectified, and the aircraft redeparted for Charlotte," the airlines said in an email.

The flight was operated by PSA Airlines and left Coastal Carolina Regional Airport en route to Charlotte.

The aircraft is a Bombardier CRJ-200, American Airlines spokesman Ross Feinstein said.

"We apologize to our customers for the inconvenience," he added.
