Protecting pets during eclipse

DURHAM, North Carolina (WTVD) -- The solar eclipse seems to be the talk and concern of many people across the country.

But some people might be asking themselves, "well what about the safety of my dog?"

Shelley Smith at animal protection society of Durham addressed some of those concerns.

When asked about the risk animals run during an eclipse, Smith said that there aren't any studies done on the issue.

She recommends that concerned pet-owners should keep their pets indoors.

The biggest concern for animals when it comes to safety would be the travel. Smith said that dogs could get excited or too overwhelmed with large crowds which could cause them to wander off. She recommends that pets are kept on a leash.

You can also put the glasses on your pet... but.. those glasses aren't likely to stay.

The last time a total solar eclipse swept the whole width of the U.S. was in 1918.
