Rocky Mount man allegedly impersonates sheriff's deputy at a school

Edgecombe County Sheriff's Office have arrested a Rocky Mount man they say has been impersonating law enforcement at an elementary school.

ROCKY MOUNT, North Carolina (WTVD) -- Edgecombe County Sheriff's Office has arrested a Rocky Mount man they say has been impersonating law enforcement at an elementary school.

Bennie Leon Hurst, 49, was identifying himself as an Edgecombe County sheriff's deputy to women waiting to pick their children up from G.W. Bulluck Elementary school in Rocky Mount, according to authorities.

Officials say, once Hurst left the school, he was confronted during a traffic stop. They say a shotgun was found in the hatchback of Hurst's car and he was immediately taken into custody.

Hurst was charged with Felony Possession of a Firearm on Educational Property and Impersonating law enforcement. He was placed in the Edgecombe County Detention Center under a $50,000 secured bond.
