In Apex, vigil remembers Las Vegas victims

APEX, North Carolina (WTVD) -- Many people are turning to their faith for guidance in the wake of the mass shooting in Las Vegas.

For Pastor Kyle Meier of Peak United Methodist Church in Apex, a quote from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. comes to mind.

"The moment our lives begin to end is when we decide to be silent on the things that matter," said Meier, sharing that quote.

"I don't think I'm alone that this story for so many of us, it was almost disturbingly normal, it was almost shockingly mundane, oh another mass shooting," Meier said. "Here we are again. And after that wave of numbness wore off, I think what terrified me is the realization that this could be the new normal."

Meier organized a prayer vigil Tuesday night outside of Apex Town Hall, just a half hour before going inside to deliver the prayer before the town hall meeting. He said he wanted to give people a space to pray and for guidance.

His overall call to action was to have people leave there and pay more attention to their neighbors.

While we don't know exactly what pushed the shooter to do what he did in Las Vegas, he warned people to pay more attention to those around them and to be there for anyone feeling alone or desperate before it's too late.
