Triangle community helps Hurricane Maria victims in Puerto Rico and US Virgin Islands

On Sunday, people in the triangle came together to help Hurricane Maria victim's in Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands.

From Raleigh with Love or Desde Raleigh Con Amor, was a fundraising event held at Circa 1888 in downtown Raleigh.

Event organizer, Marisol Martinez de Brewer, calls one of the islands home.

"Puerto Rico is a home of my heart," said Martinez de Brewer.

Managers of Circa 1888 opened their doors to allow her and members of the community to host the event.

Martinez de Brewer told ABC11 that her family in Puerto Rico is living without power and running water, so all the support and generosity she received while planning the fundraiser meant a lot to her.

"It's been overwhelming. We barely had to ask for things. People have volunteered, people have volunteered to donate, and volunteered there time."

Martinez de Brewer's mom spent time in the kitchen making authentic Puerto Rican food. All the sales from the dinner and drink specials will go toward Hurricane relief.

There were boxes set up for folks who wanted to donate essential items like baby food, diapers, and toiletries.

The event even had a raffle with an electric guitar, wine glasses, and other collectible items as prizes.

Shane Collins won the first prize of the night. "I won a hat which is good I like hats," said Collins. "We really enjoyed our time in Puerto Rico back in 2011, so we thought we would come out and give something back."
