Chicago takes annual Polar Plunge
Chicagoans, including area native Vince Vaughn, jump into frigid Lake Michigan Sunday to support Special Olympics Chicago.

CHICAGO, Ill. -- The 15th Annual Chicago Polar Plunge into Lake Michigan, the largest fundraising events for the Special Olympics Chicago, was held Sunday at North Avenue Beach. The plunge involves brave souls going into the lake despite the freezing temperatures.

The plunge raised more than $1 million in 2014 for Special Olympics Chicago, which provides year-round activities and events to nearly 5,000 athletes with special needs. This year the event has received even more attention because Chicago area native and VIP guest Vince Vaughn will be taking part in the plunge. Organizers says the event has already raised over $1 million in 2015.

Vaughn said the courage and dedication of the athletes in the Special Olympics is what led to his decision to participate in the Polar Plunge. His new comedy, "Unfinished Business," is out on March 6.

Mayoral candidate Chuy Garcia was expected to participate. Lady Gaga also took the plunge to help raise funds for the Special Olympics.

About 5,000 people were expected to jump in the frigid water, breaking the organization's previous record.
