SMITHFIELD, N.C. (WTVD) -- Johnston County officials said the Department of Social Services main building closed after bed bugs were found inside the building Thursday.

A spokesperson with Johnston County said bed bugs were found in the waiting area and a few offices at the DSS building on North Street in Smithfield.

Bed bugs are small, reddish-brown insects that live by feeding off the blood of humans, but do not transmit disease, officials said.

A pest control specialist inspected the building on Thursday and recommended treatment. After a comprehensive inspection, it was determined that the beg bugs were isolated to a small portion of the building.

The DSS main building will reopen Friday, Jan. 29 at 8 a.m.

Johnston County officials initially said the building would reopen Monday, Feb. 1
