JOHNSTON COUNTY, N.C. (WTVD) -- The Johnston County Sheriff's Office said Wednesday the body of a man missing since a reported shooting Monday night has been found.
Sheriff Steve Bizzell told ABC11 that at 9:45 p.m. Monday, deputies were called about a possible shooting at 8068-B Strickland's Crossroads Road, which is about four miles east of Benson and six miles southwest of Four Oaks.
When deputies arrived, they learned someone had been injured at the home, but could not find the victim or the alleged gunman.
After an intensive search, deputies said the body of 62-year-old Gilbert Ray Stanley was found just after 2 p.m. Wednesday.
Investigators said the suspected shooter, 37-year-old Brandon Lee Slade of the Blackmon's Crossroads Community, who is Stanley's stepson, walked up to deputies just after 11 a.m. Tuesday and turned himself in for questioning.
"He acted like he didn't know nothing had happened," Stanley's sister Kathie Mae Stanley said. "I tried to get Brandon to tell us where my brother is but he wouldn't say anything, and the officers wouldn't let us talk to him. They put him in the car."
The shooting was apparently the result of a domestic dispute. Slade was already charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, possession of a firearm, and violation of a domestic violence order.
Those charges are expected to be upgraded to murder.
The family told ABC11 the last few days have been torture but now they have some closure.
"It's very hard anytime someone in your family or somebody you know dies whatsoever, but especially under these circumstances," said Kathie Mae Stanley. "I'm really glad they found him and hopefully justice will be taken care of."
The body is being taken to the State Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy.
Slade is being held on a $500,000 bond at the Johnston County Jail.
