Cary photographer charged with sexual exploitation of minor
David Earl Maney II - who took photos of local high school events - arrested Monday after pornographic material allegedly found on his computer

CARY, N.C. (WTVD) -- Police have charged a Cary photographer with 12 counts of second-degree sexual exploitation of a minor.

David Earl Maney II, 43, was booked into the Wake County Detention Center Monday afternoon.

Police said the charges have to do with alleged pornographic material found on his computer during a search at his Arbor Way apartment last week.

Detectives said the investigation began when the mother of a 16-year-old girl came into the police department complaining about a Facebook conversation the teen allegedly had with Maney.

The 16-year-old said Maney asked her to allow him to take nude photos of her.

Police said the material found on Maney's computer did not involve the teen.

Search warrants in the case show Maney runs his own company called DM2 Photography. He has his own website and two Facebook pages.

He advertises online that he can shoot several types of photos from nude to erotic and lingerie. Cary police said the teen victim in their case had two photo shoots with Maney and neither involved nude pictures.

They had a warning for other unsuspecting parents.

"I think they should know who their children are befriending, who they're talking to on Facebook and other social media. I don't think that's out of line for any parent to do," offered Capt. Randall Rhyne with Cary Police Criminal Investigations.

ABC11 found that Maney took photos for Cary High School athletic events in the past. Wake County Public School System Spokesperson Lisa Luten told ABC11 that Maney was affiliated with the Cary High School Booster Club up until three years ago. He was never a WCPSS employee.

Maney is now being held on a $1 million bond.
