Motorcycle chase in Johnston County
A motorcyclist led police on a high-speed, multi-town chase on Saturday

A traffic stop triggered a high-speed chase early Saturday morning, spanning multiple towns and ending in a motorcycle crash.

Clayton police officers tried to pull over a speeding motorcyclist that was reportedly going 50 mph in a 35 mph zone on Champion Street just after 2 a.m.

The motorcyclist, 24-year-old David Paul Lapre, wouldn't stop, and the driver led police into Smithfield where the motorcycle sideswiped another vehicle and continued on into Selma.

Officers said they chased Lapre at speeds exceeding 120 mph through Clayton, Smithfield, and Selma until he crashed at the intersection of Starline Road and Old Beulah Road into someone's yard.

Lapre reportedly tried to flee but was apprehended by an officer and his K-9 partner.

Police charged Lapre with DWI, among multiple other charges, and has been taken to Johnston County Jail.

The motorcycle was impounded. Highway Patrol is doing a report on the motorcycle crash while Clayton PD handles the chase and arrest.

Lapre is being held under a $32,000 secured bond. No injuries were reported.
