2 men were rescued Sunday after their kayak submerged in the Pamlico Sound

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WTVD) -- The Coast Guard rescued two missing kayakers Sunday in Pamlico Sound.

Around 4:30 p.m. Saturday the Coast Guard received a call from two men saying that their kayak was submerged and they were stranded in the water.

The Coast Guard said both men were found around 1:20 a.m. Sunday, about nine miles southwest from where they originally called for help.

A lifeboat crew from the Oregon Inlet brought them in and they were treated by EMS.

The men were wearing life jackets and were in the water for more than nine hours, according to authorities.

"The fact both men were wearing life jackets greatly enhanced their chances of survival tonight," said Lt. J.G. Charlie Collins, Coast Guard Sector North Carolina command duty officer for the case. "They likely owe their lives to their decision to wear PFDs."
