FAYETTEVILLE (WTVD) -- Cumberland County investigators have released new details in the death of a Jacksonville, NC woman whose body was found in Fayetteville woods Saturday.

Maya Makio Carlton, 34, was last seen Wednesday evening or early Thursday morning in Jacksonville, according to a news release sent Monday afternoon. Carlton was in a burgundy vehicle with an unknown black male.

Neither the Jacksonville Police Department nor the Onslow County Sheriff's Office had records of missing persons reports filed on Carlton's behalf.

Hunters found Carlton's body over the weekend. It was located in the 6800 block of Cedar Creek Road.

She was identified Sunday.

"Like everyone, (I was) shocked. Absolutely shocked," said Reverend Harold Nance, the pastor of Carlton's family church in Maysville, N.C. "We don't know when death is, especially when it's a young person. It really hurts."

Investigators also said Carlton's autopsy had been completed by the state medical examiner's office on Monday, but they did not say what the ME concluded.

Anyone with information regarding the case is asked to call the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office at (910)323-1500 or Fayetteville/Cumberland County Crimestoppers at (910) 483-8477.
