FAYETTEVILLE (WTVD) -- The sale of a new basketball shoe prompted an altercation outside Cross Creek Mall in Fayetteville early Wednesday morning.

The incident started around 4:15 a.m. among members of a crowd that was gathered outside as they waited for a chance to purchase the new Air Jordan 11 Legend Blue shoe at Finish Line when the store was slated to open at 8 a.m.

An officer with the Fayetteville Police Department was working off-duty at the mall when the altercation began near an entrance between Sears and JCPenney.

Authorities said the officer retrieved a pepper spray canister from the trunk of his vehicle and deployed the spray into the crowd in an effort to break up the scuffle. Other officers were also called to the scene before the incident was brought under control.

It is unclear if anyone was hurt during the altercation.

The Fayetteville Police Department said they will conduct an internal investigation of the Use of Force to ensure that all departmental policies and procedures were adhered to during the incident.
