Dog stolen in home burglary in Durham
A Triangle couple takes matters into their own hands after burglars steal their dog.

DURHAM (WTVD) -- A frightening home break-in has left a little dachshund and its owners shaken.

Greg Lanier and Jamie Locklear say this is the second time thieves have targeted their Durham home on Gates Hill Road.

This time brazen burglars stole something more valuable -- their dog Mindy.

"Maybe on the way out they picked her up," Lanier said, telling ABC11 they believe the crooks had plans to sell Mindy until they posted missing fliers throughout the neighborhood.

The dog showed up overnight with a bruise on her chest. Her owners fear the thieves tossed their beloved pet out of a moving car onto their lawn.

Lanier is doing his best to track down the culprits that were caught on the couple's home surveillance video. They can be seen kicking in the back door.

Locklear says there's been a rash of unsolved break-ins. The Durham Crime Mapper shows at least six burglaries since January within a quarter of a mile of the couple's home. It lists one home that was robbed twice.

"We got the cameras mounted, the siren and everything and none of that seemed to work or matter," said Lanier.

"We really want to put a stop to this and keep other people from going through what we've been through," Locklear added.

Even though Mindy is back home, they are posting fliers with screen images of the suspects. It is a warning to other homeowners to be on the lookout for suspicious activity.

Anyone with information about the recent home break-ins is urged to contact Durham police.
