Title IX probe at Duke
Investigation into Title IX compliance at Duke University.

DURHAM (WTVD) -- Duke University is facing a Title IX investigation, as federal regulators are looking into whether Duke's policies for handling sexual misconduct and harassment complaints violate the law.

Title IX legislation prohibits gender discrimination in federally funded education programs.

The investigation at Duke is the latest of 197 ongoing investigations, at 161 institutions.

It comes after a Duke student filed a complaint. Specific details are not being released.

In a statement to the Duke Chronicle, Michael Schoenfield, vice president for public affairs and government relations, said the university is cooperating.

"Duke is firmly committed to sustaining a safe, inclusive environment for all students, and works diligently across the campus to ensure compliance with the letter and spirit of Title IX," Schoenfield wrote.
