Duplex fire
Emergency crews responded to a fire on Gearwood Avenue on Saturday morning.

DURHAM (WTVD) -- Emergency crews responded to a duplex fire in Durham Saturday morning.

It happened at 1403 Gearwood Avenue. Authorities said the fire started in the kitchen and was contained quickly.

Both sides of the duplex were occupied when the fire started. Everyone got out of the building safely.

Because of the heavy smoke and fire damage, the duplex is now uninhabitable. The Red Cross has stepped in to help one side of the duplex's residents, while the other side is staying with relatives.

Authorities said the fire started on the stove top and it was accidental.
