DURHAM (WTVD) -- A man is in custody after two women were shot early Monday morning, one fatally.

Police identified the suspect as Larico Fonyte Dunn, 24, of Durham. He's charged with murder.

Dunn was arrested Monday evening by members of the U.S. Marshals Joint Fugitive Task Force.

He was detained during a traffic stop on Interstate 85 in Granville County.

The shootings happened just after 2 a.m. in the 900 block of Wadesboro Street.

Erika Desiree Downey, 25, of Durham was fatally shot. The second woman's injury was described as a graze wound. She was not identified.

Dunn is also charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury. In addition, he's wanted on charges from a domestic incident August 11 involving Downey. Those charges include assault on a female, assault by strangulation, misdemeanor larceny and injury to personal property.

At a court hearing Tuesday, a prosecutor described what happened.

"Biting her on the arms, hands, fingers and face and by punching her in the stomach," said Assistant District Attorney Adam Williamson.

Downey's father Larry told ABC11 Tuesday he wants justice for his daughter.

"Why? Why would he kill her? If you don't want her, leave her alone. He didn't have to kill her, take her life," he said.

Larry Downey said he never like Dunn and tried to talk his daughter out of seeing him after meeting him the first time.

"One time, and I told her 'I don't like him. Leave him alone!'" he recalled.
