Durham VA says mold problem in ICU cleaned up
DURHAM (WTVD) -- A mold problem which shut down a unit in the Durham VA hospital's Intensive Care Unit has been cleaned up, according to a hospital spokesperson.
"I wanted to let everyone know the mold has been abated in the unit," wrote hospital Public Affairs Officer Megan Moore in an email. "MICU operations will resume after maintenance has finished cleaning up from the work."
Moore said the mold was discovered behind the wall when repair crews were fixing a clogged sink and that there were no signs of moisture leaking through so exposure to mold is unlikely.
Still, according to Moore, the hospital moved six patients out of the unit while repairs were being made.
In a statement, Moore said a board certified microbiologist claimed there was no concern for patients, staff, or visitors because most was behind a barrier. She also said patient care was not interrupted and no one was diagnosed with illness due to mold.
