Fake tanning no longer allowed for minors in North Carolina
RALEIGH (WTVD) -- Minors will no longer be allowed to use tanning beds in North Carolina.
Governor Pat McCrory signed into law the Jim Fulghum Teen Skin Cancer Prevention Act on Thursday morning to raise the minimum age for a fake tan from 13 to 18.
The bill is named in memory of the late Rep. Jim Fulghum, R-Wake, who died last year. He was a primary sponsor of the similar 2013 bill.
McCrory signed the bill at the Governor's mansion at a ceremony attended by Fulghum's family, legislators, and leaders from the medical community. The bill had been in the works for more than four years at the legislature.
"Dr. Fulghum used his medical expertise to improve the lives of his fellow citizens," McCrory said. "He was taken from us much too soon, but he gave us a legacy that will save lives for generations to come."
The new law will take effect in October.
