DURHAM (WTVD) -- A fire tore through a Durham apartment complex on Sunday, displacing 14 people and killing one family pet.

Officials said it happened around 12:20 p.m. at the Lynnhaven Apartments on Wadesboro Street.

When fire officials arrived, they saw heavy fire and smoke coming from the stairway between the first and second floor. Four units in all were nearly destroyed by the flames.

No people were injured during the fire. However, despite resuscitation efforts, one family's pet dog did not survive the blaze.

The American Red Cross is helping the five adults and nine children that are now without a place to sleep.

It took 46 firefighters several hours to extinguish the flames. Investigators are working to figure out what sparked the fire.
