FAYETTEVILLE (WTVD) -- The Department of Justice has awarded $1.8 million to the Fayetteville Police Department.
The grant will fund 15 new officers over the next three years. It's a part of the DOJ's COPS Community Hiring Program.
The package can fund most of the entry-level salaries and benefits for the new officers, or re-hire employees who were laid off amid budget cuts.
Representative Dave Price (NC-04) announced the funding Wednesday morning.
"This COPS grant is great news for the police department and the city of Fayetteville," Price said in a statement. "The new officers will support FPD's public safety mission as Fayetteville continues to grow."
This year, the Community Hiring Program will award more than $121 million in grants to 212 law enforcement agencies across the country.
