Former US Senator Robert Morgan dies

RALEIGH (WTVD) -- Robert Morgan, a former U.S. Senator, from Lillington died Saturday at the age of 90.

Morgan was a Democrat who served in the Senate from 1975 until 1981. Before that he was in the North Carolina state senate from 1955 to 1969 and was also the Attorney General for North Carolina from 1969 to 1974.

Morgan was the director of the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigations from 1985 until 1992. He resumed a general law practice in Lillington in 1992.

North Carolina Democratic Party Chairwoman Patsy Keever said in a statement Saturday:

"We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Senator Robert Morgan. Senator Morgan did an excellent job representing North Carolina in the U.S. Senate. His non-profit work helped educate voters throughout the state and advanced the cause of democracy. Senator Morgan will be missed."
