HAMPTON, Virginia (WTVD) -- The funeral for North Carolina Central University Chancellor Debra Saunders-White is being held Saturday in Hampton, Virginia.

On Friday, hundreds gathered to celebrate her life. Students, faculty, and state dignitaries attended a memorial service on campus.

Dr. Saunders-White made history by becoming NCCU's first permanent female chancellor and was awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine - the state's highest honor.

"The place she occupied in our hearts cannot be replaced, and the vacuum she left cannot be filled," acting Chancellor Dr. Johnston Akinleye told the crowd. "Her legacy and her memory will live on. Sleep well, sleep well, my friend."

Saunders-White died over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend after a battle with cancer.
