German Shepherd puppy stolen at gunpoint from CA teen
SAN LEANDRO, Calif. -- San Leandro police are sending a plea to help find a stolen puppy that was taken from its teenage owner at gunpoint. Security camera footage could help in the search for suspects.
Security camera footage shows the grainy image of a teenager walking on Dayton Avenue. With his new German Shepherd puppy named Maya.
The video then shows a car pulling up, and a man getting out. Police say he demands the dog, but the 14-year-old refuses. A second suspect is more brazen.
"The second guy got out of the car, and he actually came armed with a gun and stuck the gun at the kid's chest. That time the kid feared for his life, so he gave up Maya," said San Leandro police Lt. Robert McManus.
From another angle, the suspect's car takes off and the teen is seen walking home without his dog and calls
Neighbors are stunned. They say Dayton Avene is safe for kids and dog walkers.
"That's crazy, I can't believe someone would do that, just rob a dog," said neighbor Ivan Miramontes.
"My kids are out here all the time. They walk back and forth to practice. I won't be letting them walk by themselves, that's for sure," said Heidi Cohetero, a neighbor.
A motive for the robbery of 3-month-old Maya is unknown
"The most important thing is we get the dog back as soon as possible. We get Maya back to the boy that she belongs to," McManus said.
Police have only a vague description of the thieves. The camera got a better look at the car, a light colored sedan.
