FAYETTEVILLE (WTVD) -- A 4-year-old child is in critical condition after the car she was riding in plowed into three Fayetteville homes.

Investigators said a Ford Fusion fled the scene after crashing into a Chevrolet Tahoe in Hope Mills at Cumberland Road around 9:30 p.m. Saturday night. The driver of the Tahoe followed the Ford Fusion and obtained the license plate number.

The Fusion, driven by 28-year-old Shelley Renay Smith then pulled into the Shadowlawn subdivision and clipped a house in the 1800 block of Berriedale Drive. Police said Smith then drove through a fence and hit another home.

Smith drove down the street and crashed into another house in the 1600 block of Berridale Drive.

Police said the 4-year-old girl inside the car is Smith's daughter. She was transferred to UNC Hospital and is in critical condition.

No one was hurt inside the houses. Smith was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center with minor injuries. She is listed in fair condition.

Officers are still investigating the crash; criminal charges are pending.
