Holly Springs neighborhood sees increase in package theft
A number of residents have said their packages were stolen

HOLLY SPRINGS, N.C. (WTVD) -- This is the busiest time of year from people who deliver packages. It's also a busy time of year for people who steal those packages.

Residents of one Holly Springs neighborhood are complaining about a rash of package thefts there but they are not alone.

As cyber shopping increases, so do the number of package deliveries and the number of thefts.

One of the biggest package delivery services has tips on how to avoid becoming a victim. UPS says one of the best things you can do is request their service that will text or email you the day before the package arrives.

That way if you aren't going to be home you can arrange for the package to be delivered to a neighbor, your workplace, or one of numerous UPS pick-up spots in your area.

Another tip comes from the website "NextDoor".

Users of that site across the country have posted videos of thieves caught on surveillance cameras stealing packages.

ABC11 was in that Holly Springs neighborhood Sunset Oaks speaking with residents Monday.

There were several packages on front porches there. Directly above one of them was two security cameras. They were very noticeable and could be a deterrent for thieves.

NextDoor also encourages people to stay in touch with neighbors who will be home during the day and ask them to keep an eye for your packages and any suspicious activity.
