RIVERTON, N.J. -- The Burlington County Prosecutor's Office is investigating after human remains were found by workers digging for a pool in Riverton, New Jersey.

The discovery was made in the 600 block of Bank Avenue.

Investigators say a work crew had been excavating to install a new swimming pool when they came across the skeleton. It wasn't buried in a coffin.

Worried neighbors have been speculating ever since crime scene tape went up around the property on Monday.

"I'm hoping it's 100 year old bones. Nothing new," said Andy Hanna of Riverton.

As it turns out, that's precisely what investigators believe. They said the bones appear to have been there for a long time, perhaps 100 years or more.

Human remains were found on a property in Riverton, New Jersey Tuesday morning.

Riverton was established back in 1850 and much of the area had been farm land before that.

A State Police forensic anthropologist will be examining the remains to determine if it was a man or a woman and if there are any visible signs of trauma.

But, at this point, they are not treating it as a suspicious death.

Coincidentally, it was one year ago this month that Riverton was rocked by a murder that remains unsolved.

A 22-year-old woman was shot to death on Carriage House Lane. That was just a few doors down from Sheila Jones.

"Riverton is such a sleepy little town, nothing goes on here. All of a sudden we're on the news again," said Sheila Jones of Riverton.

Investigators may never be able to determine how this person died.

If it was indeed foul play, whoever did has probably been in his own grave for a long time.
