Movie theater assault
A man became irate after a woman's purse accidentally hit his child.

A Raleigh man is facing charges after police say he assaulted a woman who accidentally hit his daughter with her purse at White Oak Cinemas in Garner.

Escamillo Latimore, 40, has been charged with assault on a female and resisting a public officer.

Garner Police Lt. Joe Binns said Suzanne Crone was walking to a seat when the incident happened Monday night. Binns said Latimore got upset that Crone's purse hit his daughter, resulting in an argument.

Police say Latimore then pushed Crone to the ground. Moviegoers pulled him off of her and held him in the lobby until police arrived. Binns said Latimore was extremely irate and resisted arrest. An officer then tased him and he was arrested.

Nobody answered at Latimore's address when ABC11 went for a comment.

Nobody answered at Crone's address either. Moviegoers say the attack appears to have been an overreaction.

"I've accidentally hit someone with a purse and I've also been on the receiving end of that, so to overreact is kind of ridiculous," said moviegoer LaToya Snead.

"Accidents happen and everybody is so conscious of any kind of incident of any sort going on right now but I think that may have been some kind of overreaction," said Pam Deardorff, of Garner.

"I just think that is completely unwarranted," said moviegoer Joslin Lake. "Just say you're sorry. Obviously it was an accident. Just completely unwarranted. Way too much."

Latimore is scheduled to be in court Jan. 28.
