Raleigh man given 12-year sentence for filing false tax returns
WASHINGTON (WTVD) -- A Raleigh man has been sentenced to 12 years in prison on charges of conspiracy to file false claims and identity theft.
A statement from the U.S. Justice Department said 39-year-old Christian Rhodes was sentenced Wednesday in federal court and ordered to pay more than $1 million in restitution to the Internal Revenue Service.
Rhodes pleaded guilty on May 11 to one count of conspiracy to file false claims and one count of aggravated identity theft.
Court documents and statements say Rhodes and other co-conspirators recruited individuals to provide personal information, which they used to prepare false federal individual income tax returns.
Rhodes' brother, 33-year-old Rodney Wright, was sentenced to 15 months in prison on Aug. 4 after pleading guilty to one count of conspiracy to file false claims.
