Man involved in I-40 crash dies
A Raleigh man who was about to attend nursing school has died of injuries after a crash on Interstate 40 Friday night.

WAKE COUNTY, N.C. (WTVD) -- A Raleigh man is dead following a car wreck on Interstate 40 last Friday night.

A spokesperson for the State Highway Patrol told ABC11 Agenor Giron was driving around 10 miles an hour in the right hand lane when his car was struck by two other vehicles, one after the other.

The 911 calls started streaming in immediately:

"Right at Aviation Parkway, there is a very, very bad wreck."

"One car is totaled, and we're checking to see if the driver is OK."

"There is a horrible car accident, looks like the car is about to catch fire."

"It looks like one of the guys is slumped over the wheel."

According to the Highway Patrol, Giron's car was first struck from behind by a pick-up truck. The driver of the truck hit the brakes hard enough to only graze Giron's vehicle but Giron wouldn't be so lucky moments later when another passenger car slammed into his car.

A Highway Patrol spokesperson says the other car was traveling around 60 miles an hour when the collision happened. If Giron was going 10 miles an hour in the same direction, the force of that collision would have been 50 miles per hour.

No one in the second vehicle was injured, but Giron was hurt badly and was taken to Duke Hospital. He died there two days later.

Giron's family said he was going to start nursing school at Duke in two weeks.

On Facebook, a person self-identifying as one of Giron's former teachers wrote: "I will always remember our long talks, his exceptional intelligence, his extraordinary sense of humor, his chivalry but most of all his desire to always help others."

We're told Giron didn't have insurance and that his family needs help paying for his funeral and their own travel expenses. His family is from Honduras.

They have set up a "Go Fund Me" site: www.gofundme.com/agenorrosales.
