Motorcyclist dies in chase
34-year-old Michael Apodaca was killed after he lost control of his motorcycle in Raleigh during a high-speed chase.

RALEIGH (WTVD) -- A man was killed when he crashed his motorcycle during a high-speed chase.

It happened early Saturday and authorities identified him as 34-year-old Michael Apodaca of Raleigh.

Highway Patrol said Apodaca was speeding on New Bern Avenue in Raleigh. A trooper tried to stop him but he pulled into a motorcycle club, the Awol Hellions, in a parking lot.

When the trooper was closing in, Apodaca pulled out onto Poole Road and from there the high-speed chase began with speeds up to 80 miles per hour.

Troopers said Apodaca lost control of his bike and crashed into a tree on the side of a home.

He was killed and his bike split into pieces. Speed was a factor, but no word yet if alcohol was involved, according to troopers.

Authorities said they stopped Apodaca earlier in the evening for a traffic violation.
