Man killed in Durham house fire

DURHAM (WTVD) -- A man died early Monday morning after a fire tore through a Durham home.

The flames broke out around 1 a.m. on Calumet Drive, off of Horton Road, which is just north of Interstate 85.

Firefighters pulled the man out of the house unconscious, but he later died. No one else was inside the home at the time.

Friends tell ABC11 that the man was 40-year-old Devane Williams. He lived by himself and was a barber.

James Ward, Williams' best friend, became emotional as he saw the charred house for the first time.

"He was my brother, man. I loved him. This is really traumatic for me. Ain't nobody feeling like I'm feeling," said Ward.

Authorities say there has been several inquiries about a dog living in the house and the possibility that the dog died too. However, officials said they did not find a deceased dog.

Meanwhile, fire crews have determined that the blaze originated in the kitchen and was accidental.
