DURHAM (WTVD) -- Two young girls have been reunited with their family after they went missing Tuesday night in Durham County.
They said they got lost walking on a trail by their home.
"I was trying to keep my mind positive because I knew if I started going through all the bad stuff I would get nervous," said 14-year-old Aubrey Fletcher.
When Aubrey and her sister, 12-year-old Kelsey, met with ABC11, they had just finished eating their first meal in 24 hours. The sisters hadn't slept, either.
The sisters were lost in the woods near Falls Lake.
They wrote their mother a note before heading out and left behind a cell phone. Once night had fallen, they had no idea where they were and didn't have a phone to call someone for help.
Durham County Sheriff's Deputies searched the woods Tuesday night, hoping to find a clue to the girls' whereabouts.
"We just kept walking hoping we'd find a home or something, but we never did," said Aubrey.
"I'm very scared of the dark, so I was like 'I hate snakes. I wanna go home,'" said Kelsey.
Mom was sitting home worried and waiting for the girls all of Tuesday night. She told ABC11 she is not going to ban them from hiking around the house, but she has ordered them to always carry a cell phone.
