Mother, son struck by car in Durham
A mother was trying to cross one of the city's busiest roads with her 5-year-old son when a vehicle hit the two of them.

DURHAM (WTVD) -- Two people were rushed to the hospital after being hit by a car Monday evening in Durham.

Police say a woman and her 5-year-old son were hit on University Drive at Dixon Road just after 6 p.m. They were taken to Duke Hospital in critical but stable condition.

The child remains in critical condition Tuesday. The mother is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

So far, no charges have been filed against the driver. Police say alcohol was not a factor.

People living near the scene say it's a challenge crossing the street sometimes.

"It can be pretty rough because cars are just in a rush. It's not safe for someone to not watch where they're going. They don't really think about people crossing the street. So it can be really bad," said neighbor Jerchelle Green.

The incident is still under investigation.
