Fort Bragg soldier killed in Wake Co. motorcycle crash

RALEIGH (WTVD) -- Authorities said 19-year-old James David Smith, a U.S. Army soldier out of Fort Bragg, was killed after a high-speed chase in Wake County.

North Carolina State Highway Patrol said Wake County sheriff's deputies saw two motorcycles outside of Fuquay-Varina driving carelessly and recklessly. Deputies tried to pull them over for excessive speed. One motorcyclist pulled over, while the other kept driving.

Deputies pursued Smith down NC-55 to Highway 401 N. toward Garner. Troopers said the motorcyclist was traveling in excess of 145 mph. The motorcycle turned onto Legend Road going at least 100 mph and lost control approaching Old Stage Road.

Smith was ejected and hit a pick-up truck that was sitting at a stop sign on Legend Road. The father and his 14-year-old son who were inside the truck were not injured.
