Person killed on I-95 after police chase in Johnston County near Selma

SELMA, NC (WTVD) -- A person was killed in the northbound lanes of I-95 in Johnston County between Smithfield and Selma Tuesday evening following a short police chase.

The accident happened just before 9 p.m. across from the Carolina Premium Outlets mall.

Selma Police Chief Richard Cooper said the man driving a red Nissan pickup truck stopped and jumped out of the truck before running across the interstate into traffic where he was hit by an oncoming tractor-trailer truck.

The person killed was from out of state. He was not immediately identified.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating.
