Rest stop worker killed on I-40
Man was crossing highway to get to work

BENSON, N.C. (WTVD) -- A rest stop worker was hit by a car and killed along Interstate 40 near Benson Monday morning.

It happened at the rest stop at mile marker 324 in the westbound lanes just after 7 a.m.

The dead man was identified as 79-year-old Roy Joe Godwin.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating. Troopers said Godwin had just been dropped off and was crossing the highway to get to work when it happened.

No charges will be filed against the driver.

Coworkers said Godwin was an attendant and custodian who had worked at the rest area for the last 20 years.
