Two men frighten Knightdale family after trying to get into house twice

KNIGHTDALE (WTVD) -- Two men are facing several charges after police say they frightened a Knightdale family when they attempted to get inside the family's home two different times early Tuesday morning.

It started around 1:30 a.m. when authorities say they received a call from the family about two men ringing the doorbell at their home in the 1000 block of Stamford Green Drive. They told authorities the men left after failing to get in.

Knightdale Police officers arrived at the scene and searched the area but could not find the suspects.

Two hours later, the family called police again after they said the two men tried to force their way into the home through the same door.

The family told police the men had removed their shirts.

Officers arrived at the home again, and this time found the two suspects - still shirtless - driving away from the house.

Authorities said when the officers stopped the suspects' car they noticed a smell of marijuana. They searched the vehicle and discovered prescription pills (Xanax and OxyContin), cocaine, and marijuana as well as drug paraphernalia.

Police arrested and charged 22-year-old Gimel Smith of Raleigh and 22-year-old Derrick Parker of Knightdale with attempted first-degree burglary and possession of a Schedule IV substance.

Smith was also charged with possession of a Schedule II substance, possession with intent to sell and distribute illegal substances, simple marijuana possession, possession of drug paraphernalia, and driving with a revoked license.

"This sort of thing is unusual and troubling," Knightdale Police Chief Lawrence Capps said. "This family has young children at home and Princeton Manor is a safe, quiet neighborhood. Because the family called right away, we were able to catch the suspects quickly."
