Tips on how to protect yourself and your home after a rash of break-ins

HOLLY SPRINGS, N.C. (WTVD) -- Police are warning Holly Springs residents after three break-ins in three days in three different neighborhoods. All of them happened in the middle of the day.

Holly Springs Police say the series of break-ins is unusual. They're investigating and warning people to secure their homes.

"Keep your residence locked. Make sure your garage door is closed. Sometimes people will forget the side entrance on their garage, if they have another door," said Michael Stone, a detective sergeant for Holly Springs Police.

Stone advised using an alarm system if you have one. Although it might not prevent theft, it can help limit the time a thief is in your home.

If you're going away on vacation, Stone suggested having someone pick up your mail and newspapers.

"Nothing says 'I'm out of town' more than a pile of four or five newspapers at the end of your drive. Have a neighbor, or a friend, or somebody you trust come pick up your mail," Stone said.

Police warned that daylight hours, during the summer months, are when most break-ins in the area occur.

"It's when people are away at work, people are away at school," Stone said. "And a lot of people don't think about it like that."

It's an idea that terrifies Bob Fisher, who lives in one of the neighborhoods hit by a break-in.

Fisher said his neighbor went home in the middle of the day to find his home being burglarized.

"Just knowing that's happening during the day time, and you come home and find the guy inside your house, it's a little scary," Fisher said.

"This is a safe neighborhood. You know kids running around and stuff like that," Fisher adds. "And it happens about the same time school was getting out around, up here, so it was frightening too."

The three different subdivisions hit by break-ins are Sunset Ridge North, Windward Pointe, and Woodcreek.

So far, police said they have not determined whether the three burglaries are connected.

If you have any information about any of the break-ins, or notice suspicious activity in your neighborhood, please give Holly Springs Police a call on their non-emergency number (919) 552-7110.
