RALEIGH (WTVD) -- A Wake County public school principal says there's an explanation for why she was arrested over the weekend, and it's the kind of thing that could happen to anyone.
Nikia Davis is the principal at East Cary Middle School and was arrested at RDU Airport and charged with possession of stolen property -- a license plate.
In a letter to parents at the school, Davis said she believes she is the victim of someone taking her license plate and replacing it with another from a stolen car.
She explained that picking up her father when an airport authority officer stopped her because the license plate on her car was from stolen car in Fayetteville.
In the letter, she said she has owned her car for six years and it is not stolen.
Most parents at the school told ABC11 they want to give Davis the benefit of the doubt, and many said they realize something like this could even happen to them.
"I don't check my plates every time I get in the car. I didn't think of it that way. So, it could happen," said parent Kevin McIver. "You know, somebody could steal your plate and, you know, you don't know about it."
ABC11 tried to reach out Davis directly but was unsuccessful. School officials say currently there is no change in Davis' employment status, but they will monitor the case until it is resolved.
