RALEIGH (WTVD) -- Authorities in Raleigh say a man accused of killing a woman and a 2-year-old girl then tried to kill himself by cutting and ingesting toxic substances.

Raleigh police discovered the body of 40-year-old Aminata Drame and 2-year-old Fatim Diop inside a home in the 5900 block of Farm Gate Road after officers were dispatched to a check on welfare call.

Authorities said 53-year-old Elhadji Diop was transported from the scene to WakeMed to be "treated for medical conditions that are believed to be serious."

Diop, the husband of Drame and the father of Fatim, has been charged with two counts of murder.

A Facebook post and subsequent 911 call gave police a tip that something was amiss at the Farm Gate Road residence.

Those warrants will be served when Diop is released from the hospital. Police say he has "serious medical conditions."

"Last night when police questioned us about what happened we figured it was domestic violence and that the child and mother died," said neighbor Mercedes Aviles, who lives a few doors down.

Next door neighbor Alex Zuniga spent much of the day trying to reassure his 11-year-old brother that the murder scene next door was an isolated incident.

"My brother is kind of scared. He's like mom, dad, what's going to happen? He thinks it's somebody bad, just coming around," Zuniga said.

Police said there is not an ongoing safety concern connected to the incident.

The landlord said the family is originally from Rhode Island but most recently rented a home in Apex.

The investigation of the case remains ongoing.

A Facebook post and 911 call led police to a chilling scene.

Friends of the victims have set up a GoFundMe page to raise funds for their funeral expenses.
