Rash of burglaries have some in Cary on edge
More than a dozen break-ins at Cary homes in the past 60 days have police on high alert and some residents uneasy.

CARY, N.C. (WTVD) -- More than a dozen break-ins at Cary homes in the past 60 days has police on high alert and neighbors uneasy.

Investigators say in at least some of the cases the thieves are pretending to be solicitors. They will knock on doors and, if no one answers, will return to the back of the house and break-in.

The neighborhoods affected are east of N.C. Highway 55 around High House Road in the general vicinity of the sprawling Preston development.

Some neighbors told ABC11 that they are scared and fear that, if they don't hear a knock at the door, someone could break in while they are at home.

Cary police say that's why they want residents to report virtually any activity involving someone they don't recognize as part of the neighborhood.

A police spokesman says officers would rather check on legitimate solicitor than miss a lead that could solve the case.

"Anybody [residents] see that is unfamiliar, any unwanted soliciting, knocking on the door, anything," said Cary Police Capt. Randall Rhyne. "They should call us and let us come out and just investigate and make sure this person is legitimate because it could be the break we need to solve these burglaries."
