Durham residents urged to fill out survey for new police chief
DURHAM (WTVD) -- Durham City Manager Tom Bonfield announced that 14 of 42 candidates have been chosen to proceed in the city's selection process in the nationwide search for a new police chief
The remaining applicants will undergo more extensive screening by the city including phone interviews and writing tests.
City officials hosted a forum Sunday night at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church to get input from the community.
As part of the selection process, the city is urging residents to complete an online survey on what they want to see in the next police chief. They can be found in English and in Spanish.
The search for a new chief began after police chief Jose Lopez announced last September that he was stepping down and would retire at the end of 2015.
Soon after the announcement, Bonfield said in a statement "after careful consideration, I have determined that a change in leadership is necessary at this time for the City of Durham and the Durham Police Department to continue to meet the law enforcement expectations and needs of the community."
