SANFORD, N.C. -- Officials say a Sanford seventh grader has passed away after suffering some kind of medical emergency during a soccer match at East Lee Middle School.

Quaneisha Richmond, 12, was playing in the game on the evening of April 30 when she appeared to suffer from a seizure.

She was rushed to Central Carolina Hospital in Sanford where she died later that evening.

"This is a great loss for our East Lee family. We are extremely saddened and heartbroken by the loss of Quaneisha. She was a good student and loved by all her teachers and friends," said Shannon Shuey, principal of East Lee Middle School in a statement.

The cause of the child's death is under investigation by the medical examiner's office.

The school provided counselors for fellow students after the girl's death.

Funeral services are set for Saturday.

A gofundme page has been set up to help the family deal with expenses.
