SPRING LAKE (WTVD) -- Spring Lake town officials said they are going on the offensive against mosquitoes.

The town will spray Thursday night, and though they warn it won't kill all the mosquitoes, it should cut down the numbers.

And that's what parents here in Spring Lake want. They say the mosquitoes are really putting the bite on a lot of their outdoor activities.

In the past, Spring Lake, and many other communities, had spray trucks rolling through neighborhoods putting up a fog of pesticide.

Spring Lake stopped its nightly mosquito patrols in 2014, but town officials say with the Zika and other virus threats carried by mosquitoes, spraying seems like a prudent thing to do again, as well as using the round mosquito pesticide tablets.

"The spraying itself may or may not address those mosquitoes that carry Zika, but it will certainly affect the majority of the other mosquitoes that we have here in the state of North Carolina," said Tad Davis, Spring Lake town manager.

Town officials are also giving away free pesticide tablets for residents to put in standing water. That will kill the mosquito larvae.

Officials said if tonight's spray works like they hope, they will repeat the spraying around the town through July and August.
