FAYETTEVILLE (WTVD) -- A standoff led to the discovery of a body in Fayetteville on Thursday.

Police said officers were called to a home in the 6200 block of Lake Haven Drive for a well-being check around 9 a.m. after family members said they had been calling the home for weeks. They said a woman who lives in the home - who is in her 60s - said everything was fine, but nobody heard from her daughter.

When officers arrived, they were ordered to leave by the older woman.

So, crisis negotiators were called in and talked for several hours with her. They eventually persuaded her to let officers inside.

She was diagnosed with a cognitive impairment and taken into protective custody.

Police then searched the home and found the body of the woman's daughter - who was in her 40s.

Investigators say no foul play is suspected, and the older woman is undergoing an evaluation for suspected severe mental illness.
