Suspect Dead After Police Standoff in Tacoma

The individual suspected of fatally shooting a police officer in Tacoma, Washington, was killed this morning after an hours-long standoff with police, officials said.

The police officer was shot several times in the line of duty Wednesday around 4 p.m. local time while responding to a domestic disturbance, according to ABC affiliate KOMO in Seattle. He was rushed to a local hospital, where he later died. Officers called for backup shortly after responding to the disturbance and quickly reported shots fired, the Tacoma Police Department told KOMO.

A law enforcement helicopter, patrol cars and officers from multiple state and local agencies responded to the shooting and surrounded the home, where the suspect barricaded himself with a rifle, police said.

The tense standoff ended this morning around 3:30 local time after the suspect was killed. Two children who were inside the home at the time have been removed, according to Detective Ed Troyer of the Pierce County Sheriff's Department.

He did not provide details about what led to the shooting, but he said no other police officers were harmed and the neighborhood is now safe.
