Mother of teen charged in robbery said daughter 'just made a mistake'
RALEIGH (WTVD) -- A 16-year old Raleigh girl faced a judge Friday on armed robbery and conspiracy charges.
Police said Jade Brown and the three others used a firearm to hold up twin sisters and one of the sisters was shocked with a stun gun. It happened in a subdivision in the North Hills area of Raleigh Wednesday afternoon right after the girls got off a school bus.
As Jade Brown faced a judge her family, including her mother Mansah Thompson, sat in the courtroom and listened.
"She's a good kid. She just made a mistake," said Thompson. "She's a good kid."
Thompson said she didn't realize her daughter had been charged earlier this month at Knightdale High School with disorderly conduct, resisting an officer, and having a weapon on campus.
Police in Knightdale told ABC11 that the weapon was a box cutter they found in Brown's purse after she was arrested. Then Brown was alone. On Wednesday, police said she was with three other suspects.
"I don't know what happened. Maybe the wrong crowd, but my daughter's a nice girl," said Thompson.
Brown's mother also said she felt sorry for the 15-year old twins who were robbed. The girls' iPhone was stolen during the crime. They ran to a neighbor's house for help and made a dramatic call to 911.
One of them told the dispatcher, "There were like these three girls and we just got off the bus and they jumped out of car and they had guns!"
Two more girls were arrested Friday night.
Chigoze Vivian Onyebuchi, 19, and Indago Laron Norwood, 18, have been charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon and conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon.
Police said the investigation is ongoing.
