HARNETT COUNTY (WTVD) -- A group of high school students and their parents gathered Tuesday afternoon outside of a Harnett County to console one another. A teenager who just finished 9th grade was killed in an accident and another teen was hurt.

Investigators say 16-year-old Nasir Everette was walking along Micro Tower Road in Lillington Monday night around 9:15 when a 2002 Mazda Protege approached a slower moving truck and attempted to pass it in a marked passing zone. Highway Patrol says the driver, 25-year-old Joseph Hardison, struck Everette and 15-year-old Ariyana Hendon.

Hendon was rushed to the hospital and at last check is stable.

Both the victims just finished the school year at Western Harnett High School.

Administrators say Everette was getting ready to go into 10th grade.

Many of his classmates and friends are in disbelief.

"I just feel like he's going to come home soon," said Caleb Henderson.

"I'm just still in disbelief. I just don't see Nasir being the type of person that gets hit," said Andre McGuire.

Highway Patrol says Everette and his group were in the road when they were hit.

"We did hear an ambulance and we didn't really think nothing of it," said Henderson.

Friends are planning a vigil in Everette's memory.

"He's just an outgoing person. He never seemed down. He seems like the type of person to always be there for you," said McGuire.

The driver has not been charged.

Highway Patrol says troopers are investigating the crash and then will consult with the Harnett County District Attorney's Office.
